In 1854, Henry David Thoreau published a book about his two-year experience living in the wilderness called Walden, thought to be one of the greatest literary and philosophical books in American literature. No matter what era you live in or what type of life you live, Thoreau offers insights that are relevant to your situation and can lead to a better more deliberate existence. This paper will take the lessons from Walden’s first chapter, Economy and apply them to the U.S. financial crisis of 2008 in order to identify some of the causes and effects and ways to avoid a similar situation in the future.
In simple terms, the financial crisis of 2008 can be summarized as people buying more house than they could afford and the banks were willing to loan to these credit-risky people because existing regulations allowed the banks to immediately pass this risk on to unsuspecting third parties in the form of complex investment vehicles. When the borrowers could no longer make the payments, this house of cards collapsed taking with it the U.S. financial system. While there were other problems, this paper will address only the mortgage meltdown related to the housing industry.
