Ⅰ. General concepts of psychopharmacology
A. Terminologies
1. Neurotransmitters
Criteria for the identification of neurotransmitter
a. The transmitter must be shown to be present in the presynaptic terminals of the synapse and in the neurons from which those presynaptic terminals arise.
b. The transmitter must be released from the presynaptic nerve concomitantly with presynaptic nerve activity.
c. When applied experimetally to the target cells, the effects of the putative transmitter must be identical to the effects of stimulating the presynaptic pathway.
2. Neurohormones
Petide-secreting cells of the hypothalamicohypophyseal circuits originally were described as neurosecretory cells, a form of neuron receiving synaptic information from other central neurons yet secreting transmitters in a hormone-like fashion into the circulation. The transmitter released from such neurons was termed a neurohormone-i.e., a substance secreted into the blood by a neuron. However, this term has lost most of its original meaning, because these hypothalamic neurons also may form traditional synapses with central neurons.
