The Owl’s True Opinion
Nicholas de Guildford’s “The Owl and the Nightingale” is the first piece of debate literature written in English. The owl and the nightingale are two opposing characters who appear in the story and sometimes they blame each other while patiently supporting their own opinions. Generally, in debate literature, the one who has the stronger argument or philosophy and morally has the upper hand wins the argument. Also, most literature does not take the form which does not match with contemporary society’s values. Therefore, the owl blames the Nightingale’s songs, which are about physical love. Whereas the Owl supports Christian values. However, by the end of the poem, she also supports women’s adultery and it seems that she allows women to enjoy physical pleasure. The owl at first appears to be a supporter of Christian ideals, but when she shows acceptance of a woman committing adultery. However, the owl keeps her opinion related to Christianity until the poem is ended. Then, does the owl changes her opinion? If it is true, how can the readers come to a conclusion that her original opinion changes and why does the owl change opinion? If not, why does the owl make a remark to support physical love?
