Observing possibilities of
female empowerment in Fantomina
Eliza Haywood, a key figure in the eighteenth century literature, is known for her revolutionary works which focus largely on the role of the female in the patriarchal society, and the possibilities of female empowerment in social sphere. This notion is evident in her 1724 short story, Fantomina: or, Love in a Maze, a narrative of a “young lady of distinguished birth” (Haywood 227) who disguises herself in several “characters” (Haywood 229) and seduces her lover in sequence. Although it seems as though Fantomina acts out in several characters (town-mistress, maid, widow, and Lady) sequentially to protect her love, actually Haywood insinuates the possibilities of female empowerment and deconstruction of gender roles.
“But I have outwitted even the most Subtle of the deceiving Kind, and while he thinks to fool me is himself the only beguiled Person. She made herself, most certainly, extremely happy in the Reflection on the Success of her Strategems; and while the Knowledge of his Inconstancy and Levity of Nature kept her from having the real Tenderness for him she would else have had, she found the Means of gratifying the Inclination she had for his agreeable Person in as full a Manner as she could wish” (Haywood 239-240).
