A few days ago, there was an article from The Economist magazine, “Where do love songs come from?”, about how artists are sometimes inspired when they are in pained or are feeling upset (Schrager n.pag). The journalist, Allison Schrager, wrote that many artists compose their music based on their painful or gloomy experiences (n.pag). Likewise, there are many authors who write their novels based on their experiences, and they sometimes base the main character of their novels on themselves. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of those authors who based his novel on his own life. In his novel, The Great Gatsby, he created two characters, Gatsby and Nick, whose lives were similar to Fitzgerald. The author created character Gatsby to have similar characteristic as himself. Both the author and the character Gatsby had wealth, life style, relationship problems with significant other, and the same idea of achieving the American Dream. Gatsby tried to be better than Nick who seemed to have everything that Gatsby lacked. Even though Gatsby had more sources than Nick, Gatsby always strived to be better than him both in wealth and relationships in the novel, The Great Gatsby.참고 자료
