In Edith Wharton’s Roman Fever, two middle-aged American women, Grace Ansley and Alida Slade are protagonists of the story. They have been lifelong friends since they had met in Rome 25 years ago as young ladies. And now, in the mid-1920s, the story takes place in the afternoon on the terrace of a Roman restaurant. Mrs. Ansley and Mrs. Slade are revisiting Rome with their daughters, Jenny Slade and Barbara Ansley.
At first, the story seems to be little more than a tale about two middle-aged women’s reminiscence of the past. But as plot proceeds, Wharton shows Mrs. Slade`s jealousy toward Mrs. Ansley and her daughter. She is envious of Barbara because of her vivaciousness while her daughter Jenny don’t get it. Yet, she has that kind of personality in herself, so in fact, there is no exact reason to envy Barbara. As such, Wharton carefully constructed her story to bring readers to the climax. It occurs when Mrs. Slade reveals secret letter from Mrs. Slade’s fiance, Delphin which actually Mrs.
