I’m majoring in fashion design. I have learned about history of clothing and its various materials. In human history, clothing is one of the most important parts of human life. In the past, purpose of clothing is protection of human body during hazardous activities such as hunting and traveling by providing a barrier between the skin and the environment. Because of importance of the clothing, we have developed various types of fabric materials, production tools and techniques in previous recorded history. Synthetic fabrics are textiles made from synthetic fibers such as acetate, polypropylene, spandex, chiffon, and nylon. In this paper, I’m going to talk about synthetic fabric such as nylon and how it affects our life.
<중략>
I think synthetic fibers such as nylon forced an improbable alliance between three massive global industries, chemicals, textiles and fashion, each of which functioned on conflicting timescales and traditions. In chemicals, the making of explosives led almost accidentally to the making of nylon. Textiles, with its four thousand-year history were a slow moving, archaic beast, while fashion was an eager moth drawn to the flame of novelty. The story of synthetics is best example to explain relationship between chemical and fashion industry.
