There are many meaningful points to look at in Jhumpa Lahiri and James Joyce’s works. In this paper, I will analyze interesting parts that Lahiri and Joyce showed in their works with what I have learned in this course. Lahiri and Joyce tried to show some specific ideas of their background, especially people’s, through their writings. The two authors had special national traits and those formed the main theme of their works.
Since Lahiri’s parents are Bengali Indian immigrants, although she was born in the London, her works are mostly focused on Indian American immigrants. The main characters in her works, Mr. and Mrs. Das in ‘Interpreter of Maladies’, Shoba and Shukumar in ‘A Temporary Matter’, Ruma and her father in ‘Unaccustomed Earth’, are the Indian American immigrants. They show a special feature which Lahiri wanted to stress: absence of and longing for stability. There are many features which signify instability.

Love, trust, and communication are the basic elements, but absence of stability shakes up the basis. However, if the immigrants do not found stability in their new conditions, the basic problem would not be solved. For Irish, self-confidence was the most required feature in early 20thcentury.
