본문내용
Modernism started with repulsing the past art and negation of realism. It was an antiwar sentiment which could change even the people’s thought such as dehumanization and denying of God caused by World warⅠ in those days. It disturbed the sense of value and it became a cause that flourishing of the whole field of art by new observation discernment of the world so that Peter Childs clearly defined that ‘modernism is experimental, formally complex, elliptical, contains elements of decreation as well as creation.
e.e. cummings and William Carlos Williams possessed the characteristics of modernism and also their technique of writing are regarded as unique as a modernist poet. Charlse Doyle states Williams is the most complex and difficult for understanding among the modernist poets at the beginning of his book. And Rushworth M. Kidder said that for understanding cummings’ poetry, we need to have a certain skill in reading his idiosyncratic language, a skill that can best be fostered by an overview of Cummings’ poetic style.
