Education, Gender Disparity and HIV/AIDS in Cambodia1. HIV/AIDS in Cambodia
In 1997, Cambodia had the highest national HIV prevalence rate in Asia, which was around 3%. However, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS: 2005), Cambodia is now introduced as a country, which obtains “a successful declination of national adult prevalence, from 3% in 1997 to 1.9% in 2003.” As Cambodia decreases the general number of HIV/AIDS populations through “100% condom use policy in brothels,” this country faces another step of combating against HIV/AIDS, which is a gender-based gap in HIV/AIDS infection rate. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC: 2005), “although the number of men with HIV has been in decline since 1997, but the number of infected women continues to climb” and closely reaches to “a half of Cambodian HIV/AIDS populations.” Also, “in particularly the West of Cambodia along the Thai border, HIV incidence of pregnant women has increased significantly from 0.35% in 1999 to 1.48% in 2002.” This trend can be caused by gender inequality, which makes women vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.
