The novel, Sister Carrie, written by Theodore Dreiser mainly deals with the story of a poor and innocent girl named Carrie goes to New York passing through Chicago on the way she eventually rises to become a popular actresses. This story especially attracts the readers interest with its themes and the way in which the author expresses himself. This paper analyzes the theme of the novel and what Dreiser expects to achieve through describing Carries ups and downs in this story.
The first theme of this story is the endless desire for materialism. This story begins with Carrie encounter of two men called Drouet and Hurstwood in Chicago. When Carrie arrives in Chicago,
She carries only four dollars, a few paltry belongings, and her sisters address in Chicago.
Although she is initially portrayed as a poor and innocent girl, when she encounters Drouet in Chicago, her desire for material good begins. Furthermore, Drouet cheerfully acquiesces to Carries demands. This demonstrates how Drouet meets Carries material demands.
