How Ned Kelly became a National Hero
For the last 225 years, Australians seem to have deep connections with romanticised icons - the Digger, the Surf Lifesaver, Farmer…and Ned Kelly.
Our world is seemingly defined by various heroes and villains; those who have brought justice and those who have brought inequity. Ned Kelly is both of these, historically recognisedas both a convicted criminal and for doing selfless deedsby the general public. In literature, his legacy has been glamourised over generations. Writers, poets and painters all use Kelly as a source to create a hero to articulate cultural narratives and folklore. Individuals tend to create versions of Kelly to suit their own interests, irrespective of the fact that he killed at Stringybark or helped the deprived and marginalised.

Many Australians construe Ned Kelly as a national icon merely because authors and songwriters have recreated him to be. Different versions of Stringybark, revealing police brutality, disregard Kelly’s option of shooting and moderate his outlaw. Some editions of ‘characterised’ Kelly, sentimentalises an Australian idea of standing up for economically dispossessed; constructing him as a social reformer. No one seems to care about the truth and we prefer to go along with the make-believe in literature and song. Seemingly, he will never die as, “everything was ? is ? on [his]… side”36.Australia’s Sunshine, Ned Kelly
