Marriage, Don’t or Can’t?
“I don`t want to marry, I want to live alone.” Many younger generations in South Korea are saying like this a lot these days. A recent statistics surveyed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare found that a number of single men and women in Korea think marriage is just optional not necessary. They said that between 2009 and 2012, there was a drop in the percentage of young men and women who think marriage is necessary. According to the survey, the number of single men who think marriage is necessary is less than 70%. Also, the number of single women who think marriage is necessary is less than 60%. It’s quite small amount compared with the past of Korea culture. Korea is a society based on Confucian values and marriage had been considered very important traditionally. This change is quite surprising result to us. However, there are legitimate reasons why the younger generations avoid the marriage. It can be roughly divided into three reasons of why many younger generations in Korea change their attitude toward the marriage.
