Introduction
Posen Barry’s book, The sources of military Doctrine: France, Britain, and Germany between the World Wars explains how military doctrines are shaped, applied, and transformed in countries by investigating and comparing French, British, and German military doctrine between the First and the Second World Wars. In this book, Posen does not attempt to present any alternative to existing theories and perspectives; rather, acknowledging the importance of all the theories and perspectives he tests, Posen tries to find out which perspective has more explanatory power than others. In this report, I firstly introduce the framework of this study, and then describe underlying assumptions of Posen’s four important variables (two theories and two factors). And finally, I move on to discuss on the conclusion that Posen derived from the test result.
