Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” is a play that sets on the murder of John Wright. Three male investigators track down for the clues of the murderer when eventually it is the two women who find those through “trifles.” Overall, Glaspell’s play implies the resistance of women against authoritative men. This theme will be explicated by examining what the trifles are, why men dismiss them and women see them as significant clues, and what the thematic importance of the trifles is.

Therefore, the trifles in the play hold thematic importance since it indicate why Mrs. Wright killed her husband. Unlike how they are called “trifles,” they eventually lead them to find the significant clue of her murder and also tell them why she had to kill her husband. On the contrary, the men are not able to find the significant clue until the end of the play. Moreover, it is the trifles that show the resistance of the women over the authoritative men. After realizing that Mrs. Wright killed her husband, the two women conceal the most important hint the canary.
