What is intonation?
Tonal phenomena (rising and falling)
Why do we make intonation?
Because it is hard to convey the whole meaning through just words.
Proposition: Are you coming? (Yes/No)
Falling line represents the falling pitch of the tune –”Yes I am”/”No I’m not”
Rising signals incompleteness. “Yes/no, and so?”
Falls and then rises indicates approximately conveying the meaning “yes/no, but...”

Association convention: associate tones and syllables one to one from left to right.
Well-Formedenss Condition: at each stage in the derivation, all syllables are associated with at least on tone, and all tones are associated with at least one syllable
No-Crossing of Lines: association lines may not cross
