1. Pragmatics : understanding of language in context
① linguistic context: how sentences combine in a context at the discourse level
- style, appropriateness, cohesiveness, rhetorical force, topic/subtopic structure, differences between written and spoken discourse, grammatical properties
② situational context: how sentences interact with non-linguistic contexts of speaker
- physical environment, the social milieu, the subject of conversation, the time of day
