ROOM FOR ABUSE?
Opponents of euthanasia contend that doctors or family members may persuade a patient to opt for euthanasia for the wrong reasons. Families may decide, for instance, that the patientꡑs early death would be preferable to costly medical treatments. If euthanasia is legalized, critics fear the lives of the poor, the elderly, or babies born with severe medical problems will be at risk.
Peter Saunders, director of Christian Medical Fellowship, says he worries about ꡒthe level of involuntary euthanasia where patients are already killed without their consent.ꡓ
Euthanasia presents a dilemma for doctors, too. The Hippocratic Oath, a 2,000-year-old code of medical ethics, contains the pledge: ꡒI will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel.ꡓ

Some medical professionals suggest that people asking for ꡒdeath with dignityꡓ may actually be depressed, or be choosing death because they donꡑt want to be a burden to their family.
Patients wouldnꡑt seek suicide, they say, if their final days were comfortable and relatively pain-free.
