IntroductionTesco is the biggest supermarket chain in the UK, and is one of the big four supermarkets in the UK who together hold more than three quarters of the food retail market in the country (Mintel, 2010, IGD, 2010). The company has operations in 14 different countries around the world. In addition to being the biggest in the UK the company is also the market leader in Hungary and second largest in Ireland, Poland and the Slovak Republic (Mintel, 2010). The company reported revenues of £60,931 million in 2011, which represented an increase of 7.1% over the previous year. It also reported profits of £3679 million in 2011, which was an increase of 7.8% over the previous year. This impressive performance was posted in spite of the recessionary market in its core market of the UK. Nevertheless, some rumblings have been heard especially recently with news reports that Tesco has lost its market share in the UK. Wallop (2011) reports that Tesco’s market share has reduced by 0.2% compared to last year, in spite of the fact that sales has increased by 3.8%.
