The Counterattack of Common Sense: Berkeley’s Immaterialism and Materialism
Berkeley’s immaterialism is against skepticism. Matter is an ambiguous concept for metaphysics, so many skepticisms have arose regarding the concept of matter. Berkeley tries to prevent future skepticisms from arising the same point. But his original project seems to be unsuccessful because his appealing to common sense results in a counterattack to his theory.
Skepticisms which Berkeley tries to refute in the book are two kinds. The first one is epistemological skepticism, and the second one is theological skepticism. Epistemological skepticism is that true natures of things cannot be revealed because some limitations ? relativity in perception, illusion, etc. ? in our perception exist and they prevent people from perceiving the true nature of things. Theological skepticism is denying the continual interventions or creative activities of God in the world. The focal point of the skepticisms is that there is some entity beyond our perception.
