Chap 2. Survival at the South Pole
In the blackness of the freezing July sky over the South Pole, boxes of medical equipment and food were dropped from a cargo jet. The crates fell through the minus 60 degree air down to an area on the snowy surface lit by burning barrels of fuel.
People ran out to collect the boxes. One had smashed on impact, and they frantically gathered up the fresh fruit and vegetables before everything froze solid.
The staff of 41 people who kept the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station open that year were extremely grateful for the supplies.
