본문내용
Pecola, the protagonist of The Bluest Eye, thinks the reason people do not like her is that she does not have blue eyes. She loves Shirley Temple and wants to be her, not loving herself. This kind of self-loathing is gradually serious after she is raped by her own father, Cholly. After visiting Soaphead Church, Pecola becomes entirely insane. The tragedy of Pecola results from self-loathing. She does not get the feeling of love from people, even her owm family. Her father, Cholly, and her mother, Pauline, are also obsessed with self-hatred. Pecola is the daughter of them who hate themselves. This paper examines the aspects of self-loathing in Pauline and Cholly, and what affects the parent’s self-loathing on Pecola’s character.
