:This experiment intends to measure water potential of potato tuber cells.
Introduction
In order to find water potential (henceforth, ψ) of potato tuber tissue, we used indirect method: using sucrose solution. When cells are placed in free standing sucrose solution, water will move into or out of a plant cell. This process, so called “osmosis phenomenon,” occurs relatively depending on ψ difference between a plant cell and a solution. We can visibly detect gain or loss of water by weighing potato tuber cells before and after immersion in the sucrose solution. If there is no detected weight change in a tuber cell, ψ of the cell is assumed to equal to that of the solution ― now, we can say it is “isotonic solution.”
