The apocalyptic scenario begins with an earthquake near Yucca Mountain, a barren ridge 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas that is the burial site for the nation's most lethal nuclear waste.
The tremor is minor; but fresh movement in the earth's crust cause ground water to well up suddenly, flooding the repository. Soon, a lethal brew of nuclear poisons seeps into the water that flows underground to nearby Death Valley.
Insects, birds and animals drink at the valley's contaminated springs, and slowly the radioactivity spreads into the biosphere. "It would be a terrible disaster," says Charles Archambeau, a geophysicist at the University of Colorado.
