1. In the early twentieth century, a Parisian financier named Andre Level started a new kind of investment fund.
He persuaded twelve other people to contribute to a fund that he called La Peau de l’Ours (“the skin of the bear”).
With a moderate sum of money, Level then began to invest in an unusual market for his day: modern art.
In the course of the next 10 years, this investment group bought over 100 paintings and drawings, including works by Picasso and Matisse.
By the end of this period, modern art was attracting more buyers, the prices had risen, and Level decided it was time to sell.
In 1914, he organized an enormous auction in Paris and sold off all the paintings.
The results were better than his wildest hopes.
