Ⅰ. 진화심리학의 핵심 개념

‘심리학 밖의 심리학들’이라는 이 심포지엄의 의도는 법, 정치, 영화, 음악 등의 분야에 심리학이 어떻게 활용되는지 알아보려는 것이라고 들었다. 유감스럽게도, 진화심리학은 진화 연구에 심리학을 활용하는 학문이 아니다. 다시 말하면, 진화심리학은 사회심리학이나 발달심리학, 임상심리학처럼 인간 심리를 구성하는 한 영역-차례대로 사회적 행동, 생애 발달, 정신 장애-만 특수하게 연구하는 심리학의 한 분과(branch)가 아니다. 진화심리학은 심리에 대한 하나의 접근방식(approach)으로서, 현대 진화생물학의 원리를 활용하여 인간 심리를 진화적으로 분석하고 이해하는 학문이다. 정신분석학이나 행동주의 심리학 등이 원칙적으로 모든 심리 현상을 정신분석이나 행동주의의 틀로써 일관되게 이해하려 하듯이, 진화심리학은 모든 심리 현상을 자연선택에 의한 진화 이론의 틀로써 이해하고자 한다. 요컨대, 진화라는 렌즈를 어떤 심리적 현상에 들이대느냐에 따라 진화 사회심리학자가 될 수도 있고, 진화 발달심리학자, 혹은 진화 임상심리학자가 될 수도 있다(물론 이 심포지엄에서 다루는 주제들에 대해서도 진화적으로 접근하면 진화 음악심리학, 진화 정치심리학, 진화 광고심리학 등이 가능하다!).
진화심리학은 마음에 대한 진화적 접근이다. 인간의 마음은 먼 과거의 환경에서 외부의 특정한 환경 정보에 반응하여 적응적 행동을 외부에 산출하게끔 자연선택에 의해 설계된 다수의 심리 기제들의 집합이라는 전제하에, 진화심리학자들은 마음의 적응적 설계를 규명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 마음에 대한 진화적 접근이 구체적으로 어떤 것인지 살펴보자.

1. 자연선택과 적응

자연계에 살아 숨쉬는 생명들은 종종 감탄을 자아낼 만큼 복잡하고 정교한 형질들을 지닌다. ‘적응(adaptation)’이라고 불리는 이러한 형질들은 어떤 기능을 잘 수행하게끔 너무나 정교하게 잘 조직화되어 있어서 마치 지적인 생명체가 의도적으로 이들을 설계한 것 같다는 의심까지 들게 한다. 독침을 가지는 말벌을 꼭 빼닮아서 포식자를 피하는 나방의 외관, 물 속에서 수영하기 쉽게끔 유선형으로 된 고래의 몸매, 눈밭에서 먹이를 몰래 습격하기 쉽도록 흰 색인 북금곰의 색깔 등은 그 일례이다. 절대자나 자연의 섭리 같은 신비주의에 빠지지 않으면서, 어떻게 복잡정교한 생물학적 적응들이 출현했는지 설명할 수 있을까?
