1. Introduction

Yamagishi (1998) labeled trust to strangers as general trust. Yamagishi argued that since general trust operates as a device to expand social relationships, and that when opportunities for constructing new and beneficial relationship are abundant, people will set their level of general trust higher. The arguments have been supported by number of studies by Yamagishi and colleagues (for review, Yamagishi, 1998). However, it is also expected that individual’s preference for social relationships also affects the level of general trust. Indeed, behavioral genetic studies have suggested that personality dimensions such as extraversion and agreeableness (dimensions of big-five personality scales) are correlated, genetically and environmentally, with general trust (Shikishima et al., 2006; Hiraishi et al., 2008). Current study expands this line of studies by looking at the relationships between other personality dimensions and general trust.
