2. Understanding P&G global expansion case along the timeline of History of P&G
A. Japan 1960s
i. Background (of overseas expansion)
1. Opening new market
A. In the end of 1960s, as Japanese government was planning to ease a regulation on foreign capital, P&G considered it as an opportunity to enter the Japanese market. In September 1970, a new regulation on foreign capital which, allowed foreigners to own a firm’s share up to 50%, had been enacted.
2. Promising market
A. The market was predicted to grow 15% annually. The growth was boosted by two reasons.
i. Cultural reason – in Japan, women take responsibility of most housework and it’s usually their role to decide to buy consumer goods. Japanese women had very high sense of hygiene. Therefore, soap, detergent, personal hygienic goods usage per person was more than twice of the ones in Europe and the North America.
