Q. What do the stories of Washington Irving and Harriet Beecher Stowe's tell us about American history?
During its early history, America was a series of British colonies. Therefore, most of the American literature during this period was influenced by European, and particularly British. However, with the Anglo-American War of 1812 and with an increasing desire to produce their unique American literature and culture, some American writers signaled the beginning of an American literature. Washington Irving was among the first American writers and he was well qualified to interpret America to Europe and Europe to America.
Irving's works has been a great source for not just the creation story of America but also the meaning of American identity and American literary genealogy. In England in 1819, he began publishing "The Sketch Book"(1819), containing short stories that includes " The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle".
