“Africa is poor because it is rich”. I would say this contradictory phrase, but it is also a phrase that explains the reality of Africa fairly well. Also, it is exactly what the film, Blood Diamond shows. The setting of Blood Diamond is Sierra Leone in West Africa during its Civil War. Sierra Leone is abundant in natural resources, mainly in diamonds. However, the richness in diamond is said to have led to all the conflicts in Sierra Leone. Since countries and groups have been fighting over diamonds in Africa, the diamonds are now called conflict diamonds, or blood diamonds. The film, Blood Diamond stresses the brutality of the war by depicting the increasing tensions in Sierra Leone between the government and the rebel group as well as the cruel treatment of the rebel group to Sierra Leone citizens. Also, the film successfully discusses the issues of gloglobalization and human rights by unfolding as well as presence of the big capitalistic business which contributes to the war.
