본문내용
William Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear captures the time of transition between feudalism and capitalism. Two systems are presented by two groups of characters in the play. Lear and Gloucester, who represent feudalism, are overthrown by Regan, Goneril, and Edmund who desire for the possession of their father’s properties and break the sacred bond between parents and children as well as husband and wife. Cordelia and Edgar, in the other hand, retain the feudal norms of value by continuing to provide their services to Lear and Gloucester.
Lear intends to divide his kingdom between his daughters based on the degree of affection towards him in a love contest. He is willing to leave his possessions to his daughters in return for illusion of their love. Goneril and Regan acquire Lear’s kingdom by uttering words of flattery. However Cordelia persists with answering with the terse word, “Nothing”. Consequently Cordelia is driven out of the kingdom without any benediction while Goneril and Regan inherit the kingdom.
