DefinitionPneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung (one or both lungs) affecting primarily alveoli, the microscopic air sacs. It is an acute lower respiratory tract illness, typically due to infection, and it is associated with fever and focal chest symptoms (Leach, 2009; Leach, 2009). Pneumonia is caused by infections commonly from viruses or bacteria and less commonly from other microorganisms, certain drugs, and health conditions such as autoimmune diseases (Jeffrey C Pommerville, 2004). It is often a complication of the flu and most healthy individuals recover from pneumonia within 1-3 weeks with treatment. However, certain individuals tend to develop more serious pneumonia including infants, young children, adults older than 64 years, chronic disease patients, or individuals with immune system problems. Although pneumonia is a common lung infection and anyone is vulnerable to pneumonia infection, it can be life threatening if patients are left untreated; it kills thousands of people every year in all parts of the world (ALA).
