Abstract
This article contains a review ofThe Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne on the basis of the theme: sin and salvation.The review also introduces terminologies, literary expressions and historical background which Hawthorne experienced in his youth from Hawthorne’s strict family.

Reviewof The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letteris one of Nathaniel Hawthorne’sgreat masterpieces which the characteristics of Puritanism is well depicted based on his experience of his Puritan family. He usually covered the moral religious life and guilty sense that Puritans had had in 17th century. Most of his art works suggest the possibility of being forgiven to sinner with extremely detailed psychologicaldescriptions which could be also one of the main themes. In times long past, in the 17th century, Puritans who emigrated from Britain to the new continent settled in New England to purchase religious freedom. The main character Hester Prynne committed adultery with the reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and bears Pearl.
