Technical Communication Quarterly published Connecting with the “Other” in Technical Communication: World Englishes and Ethos Transformation of U.S. Native English-Speaking Students in 2011. This article written by Michael Jarvis Kwadzo Bokor (Long Island University) is a classroom-based qualitative research conducted at a Midwestern university. In an international environment, communication failure has been considered as technical communication problems among English speakers who are from different sociocultural backgrounds. Through this research, Bokor tries to understand how his students (Native English speakers) react to World Englishes context and has opportunity to observe their changed perception toward non-native speakers.
In this article, ethos transformation is introduced as a concept that links World Englishes to native English speakers. Bokor describes the ethos transformation, which is demonstrated in three levels – attitudes, beliefs, and discursive practices that occurs between the perception of linguacultural difference of native speakers and non-native speakers.
