Indigenous Australians could be regarded as a specific ethnic group which has not been discussed in our classroom materials given their unique cultural background and beliefs towards health care. In terms of indigenous Australians’ health issue, Otim, Asante, Kelaher, Doran, and Anderson (2015) claim that the health of indigenous Australians is poor compared to Australians and not even corresponds to the international standard. This is because, according to AIHW (2008, 2014), geographical feature such as their location which is mostly rural areas and sociocultural factors. Also, Waterworth, Pescud, Braham, Dimmock, and Rosenberg (2015) clearly mention that there exists health-related disparities between indigenous Australians and non-indigenous Australians. To me, this health issue prevalent in Australia has been very intriguing, when it comes to my nursing practice, because I see many people who are still experiencing imbalanced health care service stemming from their sociocultural background.
