ON THE OTHER HAND vs. ON THE CONTRARY
Don’t confuse on the other hand with on the contrary!
• on the other hand is used to contrast
• on the contrary is used to disagree / correct
The expression on the other hand is used
to say that two people or things are different in some way Tina is lazy. Andrea, on the other hand, is hardworking.
to say that the same person or thing has two very different qualities Tina is lazy. On the other hand, she's smart.
The expression on the contrary is used
to say that an idea is not true—and indeed is the opposite of the truth
A: Tin is lazy.
B: Tina isn’t lazy! On the contrary, she’s very hardworking!
Other connectors that are used to disagree / correct are actuallyand in fact; these two connectors are used in more situations than on the contrary.
