본문내용
This essay argues that following the globalization currently being orchestrated by America, the American culture is becoming the mass culture of many cultures resulting in cultural imperialism and passivity among consumers. This hegemony is providing a standard to culture industry that ensure conformity in contemporary society. Culture industry is merchandising banality, which is mostly the ideology and culture of America, and weakening high culture’s ability to challenge reality, combining standardization with predictability. To avoid cultural imperialism, consumers should be able to overcome passivity and encourage local culture pursuing cultural diversity.
1. Introduction
Americanization is standardizing the culture industry of the world resulting in passivity among customers. No matter where you are and who you are, as the lights of the theater go off or the screens of televisions and computers go on, you become a part of the ‘American Century.’
