In molecular spectroscopy, electronic states of a molecule and transition between them can be illustrated by Jablonski diagram. Y axis represent relative energy of each electronic and vibrational level, but it doesn’t represent rotational energy level. lectronic states are represented as bold horizontal lines and vibrational states are represented as fine horizontal lines.
Luminescence is spontaneous emission of light by a substance. Radiative transitions between energy level involve either absorption or emission of radiation. Fluorescence and phosphorescence are emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. By the relaxation process, they can be separated into fluorescence and phosphorescence.
Fluorescence is radiative transition between energy states which have same multiplicity(s>s, t>t) and phosphorescence is a transition between different spin
multiplicity ( t>s , s>t ).
