본문내용
In late 2011, there was a progressive protest movement named ‘Occupy Wall Street’ in New York not far from Wall Street, the heart of global capitalism. There was a similar protest named ‘Occupy Yeouido’ in front of the building of Korean financial services commission in Yeouido, which is known as the capital of Korean finance. Both protests occurred in different places, but shared the same slogan: “We are the 99%,” which means that the top 1% wealthiest people in society have a disproportionate share of capital. This slogan indicated that economic disparity is widening, especially between the top 1% and the rest. Thus, this report will mainly deal with the top 1% income share in Korea and the US, although there are many ways to measure income inequality like Gini coefficient.Income inequality appeared with capitalism and has wielded a strong influence on human society since its appearance. Since the era of early capitalism, some level of inequality has functioned as a profit motivation that forces people to compete with each other for the wealthier life and promoted economic growth.
