This paper examines alcohol, substance and drug use among adolescents in the informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya. The effect of drug abuse on society was probably best summed up in the political declaration on global drug control adopted at the Twentieth Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the World Drug Problem ([General Assembly, 2003a]). In the introduction, it states "drugs destroy lives and communities, undermine sustainable human development and generate crime. Drugs affect all sectors of society in all countries; in particular, drug abuse affects the freedom and development of young people, the world's! most valuable asset.
