The Victorian era is considered one of the most influential eras in history, as Mark Twain said "British history is two thousand years old and yet in a good many ways the world has moved farther ahead since the Queen was born than it moved in all the rest of the two thousand put together” (3). This era is the peak of the British Empire with the successful economic development of the Industrial Revolution. The British Empire was an Empire on which the sun never sets, colonizing countries like Canada, New Zealand, South Africa. However, the country experienced political and social upheaval. For example, the status of bourgeoisie was established and the working class began to voice their opinion. In this essay, I am going to examine the condition of England in the Victorian era through the representative poem, prose and drama.
Lord Tennyson, a representative Victorian poet, mainly writes poems about solitude and despair, showing his own problems and conflicts.
