Cacao is believed to have been used since around 1000 B.C. by the Olmacs who lived near the current southern Veracruz in Mexico. The Mayans, who continued to appear, began to grow cacao, lived in the south and took it with them during their migration to the northern Yucatan Peninsula. Later Aztecs grew cacao in the form of a farm and even escorted it to the army to carry cacao from the south.
The first time cacao was introduced to the West was in 1502 when Columbus explored the New World. Columbus came across the Yucatan Peninsula, near Guanaja Island, and accidentally took the native canoe and returned with the cacao fruit. But at this time, no one was interested in cacao because everyone was expecting gold from the New World.
Later, in 1520, the Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes was able to easily occupy Aztec because of the epidemic spread by early merchants, and was told about the value of cacao from the Aztec emperor Montezuma. That's how cacao beans came to pass on to Europeans.
