Chapter 4. The Backgrounds of English; Chapter 2. The Background of English
- “Indo-European”, the source of most other European and many south-Asian languages
◎ Indo-European Origins
- On the basis of cognate words, we can infer a good deal about Indo-European culture (ex. mead, wheel; axle; yoke, pecuniary, fee, etc.)
- The Indo-European homeland:
√ we can never be sure of where it began, but has been identified with the Kurgan culture of mound builders who lived northwest of the Caucasus and north of the Caspian Sea -> expanded into the Balkans and northern Europe, and thereafter into Iran, Anatolia, and southern Europe
- How Indo-European was discovered:
√ some languages reveal similarities among them (ex. English father, Norwegians, Danish, and Swedish fader, Dutch vader, German Vater, …) => we needed some explanation of the resemblances
√ the explanation that all those languages are historical developments of a no longer existing source language was first proposed by Sir William Jones
