Adenylyl cyclase는 세포 내에 관계적으로 존재하는 단백질로, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)을 생성하여 세포 내 신호전달과정에 관여함. 포유류에서는 두 가지 형태의 AC가 존재하는 것으로 알려져 있는데, 세포막에 고정되어 G protein의 조절을 받는 transmembrane adenylyl cyclase와 세포질, 골지체, 중심체, 미토콘드리아, 세포핵 등에 주로 존재하며 G protein과는 무관하게 세포 내 bicarbonate 및 Ca2+ 농도에 의해 조절된다고 알려져 있는 soluble adenylyl cyclase가 존재함.근육세포에서 insulin receptor와 adrenergic receptor를 통한 glucose uptake pathway를 보면 공통적으로 mTORC2를 활성화 시키고 이에 따라 mTORC1 또한 증가시킴. mTORC2의 경우에는 cell survival, growth 및 cell polarity에 영향을 미치지만 mTORC1의 경우에는 protein synthesis와 autophagy에 영향을 줌. Autophagy는 starvation 또는 외부 stress에 반응하여 vesicle구조를 형성하여 세포소기관들을 에워싸고 이를 분해하여 에너지를 만들어 내는 과정임. 이 과정은 lysosome과 결합하여 lysosomal hydrololytic enzyme이 세포내 물질과 세포 소기관을 분해하고 이를 통해 에너지를 생산하는 시스템으로 세포의 발생과 분화 및 항상성 유지에 중요한 역할을 함. 일반적으로 autophagy는 핵이 있는 모든 세포에 서 발견되며 여러 생물에서 autophagy에 관련된 유전자들이 발견됨으로써 최근 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있음. Autophagy와 관련된 유전자들은 세포 의 성장, 증식, 생존, 죽음에 관련된 signaling pathway와 일정부분 관련이 있음.
