서론북이스라엘과 남유다의 멸망 후, 포로기 시대를 지난 이스라엘은 주전 539년경 고레스
칙령에 의해 유다 땅으로부터 포로가 된 사람들 중 일부가 먼저 스룹바벨의 지휘아래 예
루살렘으로 돌아오게 된다. 1차 귀한자들을 예루살렘에 들어오고 일곱 째달(7월은 티쉬리
[9-10월]) 즉, 3개월 후에 모두 예루살렘으로 모여 모세의 율법에 따라 번제를 드린다(스
3:1-3). 그리고 그들을 드디어 기다리던 성전 건축을 시작하고, 그 일로 말미암아 감격과
찬양이 터져나온다(스 3:8-13). 성전 건축을 시작한 사람들은 사로잡혔던 자들의 자손들
이었다(스 4:1).
그런데 그들이 성전을 건축하려고 할때, 그 땅의 백성들은 자신들도 성전 건축에 참여
할 수 있도록 부탁을 하였지만, 거절당한다. 그래서 성전 건축은 잠시 동안 멈추게 되지
만, 결국은 다시 건축할 수 있게 되었고, 건축에 참여했던 모든 사람들은 유월절을 지키
게 된다.
왜 사로잡혔다가 돌아온 자들은 성전 건축을 하게 되는 일에 주도적인 역할을 하게 되
었을까? 그리고 그 땅에 살던 사람들은 왜 거부를 당했을까? 포로기가 지난 후, 귀한 시
대를 맞이하는 그들의 상황에서 “이스라엘”은 누구이며, 정체성은 무엇일까? 이런 질문들
을 던져보며, 포로 후기 공동체를 설명하는 에스라 본문을 기준으로 이 질문들에 대한
답을 찾아가 보고자 한다.

1. 사로잡혔던 자들 유다와 베냐민 그리고 이스라엘
남유다의 멸망 후, 남유다 사람들은 바벨론에 포로로 끌려간 사람들이 있고, 그 땅에
남아 있던 사람들이 있고, 그 외의 지역으로 흩어졌던 자들이 있다. 그 중에서 성서는 바
벨론으로 끌려갔던 사람들에게 집중이 되어 이야기가 서술되고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 특
별히, 포로에서 돌아온 자들 또는 사로잡혔던 자들이라고 불리는 사람들은 예루살렘으로

돌아와 성전을 건축하는 데 주인공이 된다. 그리고 그들은 “유다와 베냐민” 또는 “유다
백성” 등으로 불린다.
