사회적 표상이론은 2차세계대전 후에 프랑스에서 창안된 사회심리학의 새로운 학풍(tradition)이다. 이 학풍은 Moscovici가 "La Psychology: son image et son public(1961)"을 저술하면서 비롯되었으며, Farr와 Moscovici는 자신들이 편집 出刊한 Social Represen- tations(1984)에서 사회적 표상에 대한 이론적 설명과 더불어, 그 동안의 연구결과를 일차적으로 묶어놓고 있다. 이 이론이 점차로 영국, 카나다, 미국을 비롯한 영어문화권에 확산되기 시작하면서, "The Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior(17:4, December, 1987)"에서 특집으로 이 이론을 집중적으로 소개하였다.
그럼에도 불구하고 이 이론에 대한 올바르고 충분한 이해는 영어문화권에서 아직 不足하다는 것이 Farr(1987)를 비롯한 이 분야 연구자들의 솔직한 표현이다. 심지어는 이 분야 연구자들 간에도, 사회적 표상이 어떤 현상이며 개념인가에 대한 의견의 일치가 부족한 상태이다. 이러한 혼돈이 빚어지고 있는데는 이 이론의 창안자인 "Moscovici"자신이 이 개념에 대한 정의를 소홀히 한데서 일차적으로 기인한다고 볼 수 있다. 그는 이 개념을 정의하는 일보다, 이 개념이 지칭하는 현상자체를 설명하는 일에 더욱 중점을 두었다.
