본문내용
1. Definition of plasmaPlasma is one of the four fundamental states of matter, along with solid, liquid, and gas. It is an ionized gas consisting of a collection of charged particles, including ions, electrons, and neutral atoms or molecules. Plasma can be found naturally in the universe in the form of stars, lightning, and auroras, but it can also be artificially created and controlled for various applications, such as in plasma TVs, fusion energy, and medical treatments. In a plasma, the electrons and ions are not bound together, which gives rise to unique properties such as conductivity, susceptibility to magnetic fields, and high energy.
2. Brief history of plasma research
The study of plasma began in the late 19th century with the discovery of cathode rays by Sir William Crookes in 1879, which were found to be streams of negatively charged particles. In 1897, J.J. Thomson discovered the electron, and this led to the development of the first vacuum tubes and plasma devices, such as the Crookes tube and the Geissler tube.
