On the whole, I talked about the psychoanalytical criticism and other criticisms; then, I showed apparent evidence that proves the effects of the approach. As I pointed out, critics can observe the relation between unconsciousness and figurative language, and also apprehend universal factors in the writing when they approach the characters psychoanalytically. In Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, we can understand human beings common characteristic of mental development in terms of gender role and affection. All human beings have the Oedipal stage in their infancy, and some people, who do not have such good parents and family, have the possibility of becoming oedipal. Thus, readers feel a catharsis through Paul’s story, and Sons and Lovers comes to have more depth and effect.
