Introduction to JavaScript

1. Brief Introduction about JavaScript
JavaScript was designed to add interactivity to HTML pages. Also JavaScript is scripting language is a lightweight programming language. A JavaScript is lines of executable computer code and usually embedded directly in HTML pages. JavaScript is an interpreted language which means that scripts execute without preliminary compilation. Everyone can use JavaScript without purchasing a license JavaScript is supported by all major browsers, like Netscape and Internet Explorer. JavaScript is used in millions of Web pages to improve the design, validate forms, and much more. JavaScript was developed by Netscape and is the most popular scripting language on the internet.
Characteristic of JavaScript
- The JavaScript Window object represents the window in which the browser displays documents
- The Window object provides the largest enclosing referencing environment for scripts
- Its properties are visible to all scripts in the document (they are the global)
- Other Window properties:
- document - a reference to the Document object that the window displays
- frames - an array of references to the frames of the document
- forms - an array of references to the forms of the document
- Each Form object has an elements array, which has references to the form’s elements
- Form elements are usually referenced by name, but this is a problem for radio buttons
2. The difference between Java and JavaScript
They are definitely different. First of all Java is developed from Sun Microsystems, but JavaScript is developed from Netscape. Second of all, JavaScript doesn’t require compiler to execute the program. However Java must need to have compiler such as Java OS or Java Virtual Machine to execute the program. These two reasons are the most differences between Java and JavaScript. See Fig 1.1
