Investigation of classroom interaction and the discussion of these has set out four significant and consistent features, since these might best describe the overall features of the teaching-learning process taking place in the classroom studied. First, all lessons observed were strongly established, showing fixed procedures for lesson task routines. The time on these tasks was intensively focused, and the teacher tightly controlled all lessons. Secondly, oral language was given priority during all lessons observed, just as the instructional materials themselves were heavily based on oral language and the students were required to listen to and repeat a large quantity of English. Regular but limited word-level reading and letter-level writing was practiced. Thirdly, the whole classroom interaction was oriented towards intensive practice for complete understanding and accurate and fluent reproduction of these language models. In doing this, various activities were employed, usually including repetition, substitution drills, memorization or pattern practice. Question-and-answer exchanges predominated classroom discourse, checking and confirming the students` input comprehension and output production. Due to the intensive practice-oriented interaction and the language models, which was the aim of the tasks, most activities seemed to offer limited challenge to the students (aged ten and eleven) and their communicative or incidental language use was rare.
